Meals on Wheels of Syracuse After-Party Fund Raiser raises $2,500

Syracuse, NY, June 17, 2016 -- Meals on Wheels of Syracuse raised more than $2,500 from items raffled and auctioned at the John Suhey III Annual Golf Tournament After-Party.  Golfers completed a round of competitive golf in honor John Suhey III who passed in 2012.  Afterwards the golfers and friends attended an After-Party at DJ’s on the Blvd. where items were raffled and auctioned to benefit the mission of Meals on Wheels of Syracuse.

According to Mason Kaufman, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels, “The golfers were so enthused, purchasing raffle tickets and bidding on items.  We raised enough money to subsidize 1,025 meals for our home-bound neighbors.  I can’t tell you how generous the golfers, the owner and staff at DJ’s on the Blvd were supporting us.  The money raised will feed so many seniors and disabled-adults who otherwise might go hungry. It was a beautiful day to honor John Suhey through a golf tournament and a beautiful day helping feed our neighbors.”

Meals on Wheels of Syracuse is the 4th oldest Meals on Wheels program in the country, “Feeding home-bound neighbors since 1959.”  With the help of hundreds of volunteers and donors, the Syracuse program served more than 212,700 nourishing meals to 765 recipients last year. It is on pace to serve more meals to more people this year.

Funding for the 14th Annual Awareness Campaign Made Possible by Subaru’s Share the Love Event

Syracuse, NY, June 14, 2016 – Meals on Wheels of Syracuse is proud to announce that it has received a $1,250 grant award from Meals on Wheels America for its participation in the 14th Annual March for Meals campaign. This past March was Meals on Wheels of Syracuse’s’ 14th year participating in the national Meals on Wheels awareness campaign designed to celebrate the proven collaboration of local community organizations, businesses, all levels of government and compassionate individuals to ensure that our seniors are not forgotten.

Executive Director, Mason Kaufman said, “we are so grateful to everyone who participated as volunteers delivering meals and working in our kitchen, or helped promote our mission on through social and other media in March. We also thank Meals on Wheels America for providing this generous support.  It was an exciting month of activity that we hope will build awareness of the need for volunteers to support our important cause throughout the year.”

Throughout the month of March, local leaders and celebrities volunteered, tweeted and shared photos of their support for Meals on Wheels. County Legislators, radio personalities, Miss Syracuse, Miss Syracuse Teen and Miss Syracuse Princess, to name a few were involved. Meals on Wheels had numerous television and radio news stories run, and had Meals on Wheels representatives appeared on public affairs and talk shows.  A contingent of supporters marched in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  The agency topped the month off by rolling out its new logo with a new sign donated by a local sign business, and installed by another local company.

Nearly $400,000 has been granted to 265 local Meals on Wheels programs and one Meals on Wheels America-affiliated State Association based on their March for Meals efforts. This year’s grants were made possible through the generosity of Subaru of America, Inc. and its eighth annual Share the Love Event. During the event held from November 19, 2015 through January 2, 2016, $250 was donated to a customer’s choice of a national or hometown charity for every new Subaru vehicle purchased or leased. Meals on Wheels America has been a participating national charity since the event’s inception in 2008.

“The March for Meals grant program is our way of recognizing Meals on Wheels America Members for their efforts to raise awareness and much-needed support for the critical service they provide their communities,” said Meals on Wheels America President and CEO Ellie Hollander. “Together, we can change the way this country cares for its seniors.”

The annual March for Meals campaign is an effort led by Meals on Wheels America to present opportunities for volunteers, businesses and governments to support seniors in a variety of ways that make communities stronger, safer and healthier. For more information, visit marchformeals.com.
