Meals on Wheels of Syracuse Open House & Volunteer Recruitment Fair June 24

New Volunteer Drivers Needed to Deliver Meals to Homebound Seniors

Syracuse, NY – June 18, 2014 – Meals on Wheels of Syracuse is planning an Open House and Volunteer Recruitment Fair for Tuesday, June 24, 2014, from 1:00PM to 3:00PM.  The event will be held at Meals on Wheels of Syracuse, 300 Burt Street in Syracuse.  Parking and entrance to Meals on Wheels are located off of Oakwood Ave on the backside of the Almus Olver Towers.

“We’re inviting the community to come to our open house, meet our staff, tour our facility, and consider volunteering!” said Mason Kaufman, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels of Syracuse. “We need to recruit more volunteer drivers to deliver meals.   We’re encouraging retirees, church groups, service organizations, and businesses to volunteer just once a week for an hour or two.   Many of our volunteers have been with us for years.  Some have been with us for 10, 15, up to 26 years!  We are grateful for their dedication.  We have around 30 delivery routes to fill each weekday.  It takes 60 to 90 minutes to deliver meals, starting at around 10:45am.”

Staff and current volunteers will be on hand at the open house to share their experiences and answer questions about the organization.   Sample meals will be on display, Case Managers will be present, and informational materials will be available.  Kaufman said, “We welcome those who may be interested in meal service for themselves or a family member to attend, ask questions, and get the facts.”

Anyone interested in volunteering should visit or call (315) 478-5948 for information.
